Modern Warfare 4: how levels, Prestige and camos work

From level 1 to 55, DMZ's 70-level track, Classic or Regular Prestige, Prestige Master up to level 1,000, camos, Weapon Prestige and daily challenges, based on the official October 19 guide.

On October 19, 2026, a few days before multiplayer launched, the official Call of Duty team published a guide to how progression works in Modern Warfare 4: player levels, Prestige, weapon camos, optic reticles, daily challenges and calling cards. That is a lot of information in one place. Here at SequeLariCOD we sorted out what matters for new players, in our own words, and left the link to the full text at the end. As always, only what the official source says goes in. When it does not say something, we tell you.

Player level: from 1 to 55

In multiplayer, everyone starts at level 1 and climbs to level 55. Experience (XP) comes from matches, eliminations, objectives and daily challenges. Each level unlocks something new: weapons, equipment, perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and custom loadouts. In the first five levels you already get the default loadouts, Create a Class, the VEL 46 submachine gun and the Bomb Glider killstreak. Level 55 brings the last killstreak on the list, Air Lockdown.

A tip that works in any game of the series: at first, use the ready-made loadouts to learn the maps and modes. Once Create a Class unlocks, change one piece at a time so you understand what each choice does to your playstyle.

DMZ has its own 70-level track

DMZ, the extraction mode, has separate progression with 70 levels. DMZ XP comes from story missions, dynamic operations, side ops and other activities. One important detail: XP earned in DMZ also counts toward the general 1 to 55 level, but multiplayer and Warzone XP does not count toward the DMZ level. At DMZ level 1 you unlock the 3D printer and a few basic survival gear recipes. Later come the vendor (level 5), the Gunsmith (level 10) and, at level 70, more stash space.

Prestige: Classic or Regular

Once you reach level 55, you can enter Prestige. Modern Warfare 4 has 10 Prestige levels, and at each one you choose between two paths:

  • Classic: resets unlocks and custom loadouts, like the older games in the series. In return you get 20% more XP, a Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetic rewards.
  • Regular: your level goes back to 1, but everything you already unlocked stays unlocked, loadouts included.

The Permanent Unlock Token keeps one item of your choice unlocked forever, even after more Classic Prestiges. The official text itself suggests spending it on perks, field upgrades, killstreaks or equipment rather than weapons. Each Prestige has its own rewards, such as Operator skins, loading screens, emblems and weapon blueprints. Prestige 1, for example, ends with a Mosin-Nagant rifle blueprint, and Prestige 10 brings Sang 9mm pistol blueprints.

Prestige Master: up to level 1,000

After the 10th Prestige comes Prestige Master, which runs from level 56 to level 1,000, called Prestige Legend. Up to level 99 there are rewards every 5 or 10 levels; after that, every 25 levels. They include colors for your level number and special icons from level 100. The final level 1,000 rewards are still secret: the official post marks them as classified, so we do not list anything about them.

Weapon camos

Camos are the big goal for players who love leveling weapons. The official guide splits them into four groups:

  • Military: eight per weapon, unlocked as that weapon's level goes up.
  • Special: three per weapon, each with its own combat challenge. Once done, they are available in every mode.
  • Completionist: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence, which ask you to finish the earlier camos on the weapons of each class.
  • Mastery: different for multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. The Warzone challenges were kept secret until Season 1.

A nice change is that the camo grind is shared by every mode, while the special challenges adapt to the mode you are playing. So you can make progress playing whatever you like.

Weapon Prestige

When a weapon hits max level, it can enter Weapon Prestige. The weapon level goes back to 1 and attachments lock again, except the Apex attachment and blueprints. Camos, reticles, stickers and decals stay with you. Weapon Prestige has its own camo family, called Pyroclast, with four versions. After the first Weapon Prestige, the weapon moves automatically into Weapon Prestige Master, which no longer resets the level. Double Weapon XP tokens help speed it up.

Reticles, daily challenges and calling cards

Each optic has reticles unlocked by getting eliminations while aiming down it, and that progress counts in every mode, including Warzone from Season 1. The official text does not say how many eliminations each reticle needs, so we do not either.

Multiplayer has three daily challenges worth 2,500 XP each, plus an 8,000 XP bonus for finishing all three. You can swap one challenge per day. The post also said Warzone would get its own set of daily challenges at the start of Season 1.

Calling cards come from challenges split by category (multiplayer, DMZ and shared modes), with elite and tiered challenges. Completing a set, a whole category or every category grants increasingly rare animated cards. You can track up to nine challenges at once.

What the source does not say

The official post does not give the exact Season 1 date (it started later, on November 5, according to other official posts in our calendar), does not reveal the level 1,000 rewards or the Warzone mastery camo challenges, and does not mention a per-season Prestige. If Call of Duty publishes more details, this article will be updated.

Safety reminder: progress, levels and camos are earned by playing. No website, video or program unlocks camos, Prestige or COD Points for free, and handing your password to someone to "level you up" can cost you your account. See the tips on our Play safe page.
