Modern Warfare 4 Kill Block: how the arena that changes every match works

Slabs and Combos, the facility's engineering, finding your way by sectors, weather, returning classic places and the rules of 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight, from the official post of July 15, 2026.

On July 15, 2026, three months before launch, the official Call of Duty blog published "Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer: Kill Block Intel", signed by the Call of Duty Staff team. It was the first full explanation of Kill Block, the most unusual new feature in Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer: a battlefield that is assembled differently every match. This article, written by the SequeLariCOD team in our own words, explains how Kill Block works, how Gunfight plays on it and what the post revealed about the rest of multiplayer. The link to the full post is at the end, under sources.

What Kill Block is

In the game's story, Kill Block is the nickname of an off-the-books military training site, the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility. Teams train there with live fire in layouts that change between matches. For players, this means Kill Block is not a fixed map but a set of pieces the game fits together in different ways.

Those pieces are called Slabs. Every Kill Block map joins three of them: two End Slabs at the ends and one Central Slab in the middle. The combination of the three in a match is called a Combo. According to the post, more than 500 configurations would be possible at launch alone, on October 23, and the text mentions dozens of Slabs.

How the arena changes shape

The post describes the facility's engineering as if it were real. There are eight concrete towers with motors, pulleys and electronics. The three Slabs are steel platforms riding on wheel sets along rails above and below the training area. When the map changes, the active Slab detaches and lowers into a chamber under the arena; then the rails shift and another Slab is hoisted up and locked in place. The result is a training site in the style of the shoot houses used by elite teams.

Every Combo is rectangular and always covers the same area, which the post compares to the Shoot House map from Modern Warfare (2019). Each Slab stands on its own but has openings to its neighbors, and sightlines often cross from one Slab into the next, sometimes across the whole map.

Ends and center: what each Slab does

There are always two End Slabs, each taking up a third of the space. Teams enter through an armory room and a perimeter gate closes behind them when the match starts. The gates are labeled A and B, on opposite sides. In modes other than Gunfight, each team spawns at the back of its End Slab.

The Central Slab links the two ends and is built for fighting from many angles, with high ground, chokepoints and defensive spots. Nobody is locked into their part: teams move freely across all three Slabs.

Finding your way

Since the map is never the same, the post gives some tips to stay oriented. The long walls, north and south, have sectors marked A and B, and the short walls, east and west, have C and D sectors between the entry gates. Each marker combines a letter and a number, like "B4" or "B3", which makes it easier to call out enemy positions. Most Slabs also have their name spray-painted on a wall, and the name shows on screen during infiltration.

Modern Warfare 4 movement applies here: you can climb roofs, containers, balconies and other high points. The post repeats the usual trade-off: up high you see more, but you are also more exposed. Some doors can be shot open, breached or opened quietly.

Weather that changes the match

Some Slabs have fans and weather simulation systems that spread water mist or snow. Rain and snow change visibility and sightlines. Even your weapon reacts: ice or moisture builds up on it until you swap weapons or reload. The post shows the effect on the Central Slab called Crash.

Familiar places return

Some Slabs are new and some pay tribute to famous places from the series. The post names three: Crash, from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Storage Town, from Warzone's Verdansk, and Shoot House, from Modern Warfare (2019). Next to different Slabs, these places get new routes and new hot spots.

The post also shows some examples, noting the names could still change before launch: Ambush, a central road with convoys and sniper nests; Blacksite, an end with three prefab buildings, mud and an open container; Killhouse, an end with gabion walls and a very exposed center; ME-Town, a dirt yard with four buildings; Snow Block, a maze of gabions, containers and concrete blocks; and Trench, a no man's land with trenches and sandbags, where the middle is the riskiest place.

Gunfight on Kill Block

At launch, Kill Block hosts Gunfight in two sizes: the classic 3v3 and the new 10v10. Every round is single life. There are no custom loadouts: everyone gets the same random primary and secondary weapon, plus the same equipment. That way, the winner is whoever plays best with what they were given.

If time runs out with no team eliminated, an overtime flag appears in the middle; capturing it wins the round, and if nobody captures it, the team with more total health wins. Teams switch sides after the first round. Every two rounds, the Slabs change to a new Combo and a new set of weapons is drawn. The match ends when a team wins six rounds. The post also says the facility was built to support other core modes in future seasons.

The rest of multiplayer

At the end, the post previewed the size of multiplayer: 12 core maps at launch and two more fan favorites soon after. Three examples were named: Lotus, a Korean fishing village; Rooftops, the snowy roofs of a New York hotel; and Mumbai, a dense residential neighborhood. It also promised larger battles with armored vehicles, modes like Team Deathmatch, Domination and Hardpoint, Hardcore versions and party modes.

To see each map and mode that actually arrived, check the Kill Block page on the site and the launch maps and modes guide. And, as with any online game, remember the tips on the Play it safe page.
