Before Modern Warfare 4 reached stores on October 23, 2026, the official Call of Duty blog published three posts about how the game would be sold: "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: Pre-Order Guide and Benefits" from May 28, 2026 (updated July 23), "Modern Warfare 4: Pre-Order Bonus: Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint" from September 9, and "Modern Warfare 4 Launches October 23 as a Standalone Release" from October 15. This article, written by the SequeLariCOD team in our own words, explains what each edition includes, what the pre-order bonuses were and why the game did not join Game Pass at launch. It is not a buying recommendation: the goal is to understand what each name means when it shows up in the game, in the glossary or in community chats.
Platforms and studios
According to the pre-order guide, Modern Warfare 4 launched on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, through Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC. Nintendo Switch 2 is also listed, with pre-orders promised for later. The game did not release on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Development is led by Infinity Ward, with Beenox on the PC version and Digital Legends on the Switch 2 version, plus several other Activision studios named in the posts. On PC, the guide notes that the game requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, a topic our requirements article explains in more detail.
The three editions
The official guide describes three ways to buy the game. Two are digital and available on every platform; the third is a disc and exists only for consoles.
- Digital Standard Edition: the full game, with Open Beta early access and the Hunter Killer Operator skin.
- Digital Vault Edition: the full game plus all the Vault extras explained below.
- Physical Standard Edition: the disc for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, sold at participating retailers. The post says there is no physical PC version and no Vault on disc.
Players who bought the digital Standard Edition could upgrade to the Vault later, always on the same platform as the purchase. The post points out that the upgrade does not apply to the disc edition, because the Vault is digital only.
What came in the Vault Edition
The Vault is the edition with the most content, and the guide lists every part. The names appear in English in the game, so we kept the original spelling.
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: the Operators Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, with Price and Valeria in masked and unmasked versions.
- Special Forces Operator Pack: four special forces Operators from different countries (COM SFT from France, KSK Amphibious from Germany, South Korean Special Forces and SAS from the United Kingdom), each with a voice in the local language.
- Signature Weapon Collection: five weapon blueprints, four of them with an Apex attachment: Kastov 762 "Voltspine" (Kastov Arc), ISO Nightshade "La Sombra Venenosa" (ISO Trace), Rezi 12 "Shattered Code" (Rezi Enforcer), Oris 8.6 "Volt-Edge" (Oris Razor) and the "Sombra Besada" Combat Knife.
- One season of BlackCell: it starts in Season 1 for those who played by then, or in the current season for later buyers, with the full Battle Pass, 20 tier skips, 1,100 COD Points, an Operator and a weapon blueprint.
- DMZ Deployment Bonus: extra DMZ content, which the post left to be detailed later.
BlackCell and the Battle Pass are explained in our Season 1 article. The Apex attachments of each weapon are in the guide tab of each weapon page on the site, always with the official source.
Pre-order bonuses: Beta, Hunter Killer and camos
All three editions included Open Beta early access. On the digital ones, access was automatic; with the disc edition, the store handed out a code at the time of purchase. Both digital editions also included the Hunter Killer Operator skin, which unlocked right away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone and arrived in Modern Warfare 4 at launch, redeemable until October 23, 2027.
In the July 23 update, the guide added the "Gilded Pearl" camo pack. Digital pre-orders unlocked the "Moonlit Pearl" universal camo right away. A second one, "Gilded Ruin", came from a Black Ops 7 challenge: collect 5,000 Skulls, worth 5 per elimination in Endgame, 10 in multiplayer, 1 in Zombies and 30 in Warzone. The first 100,000 players to finish got a numbered version; those who finished later received the regular version. Both camos started working on Modern Warfare 4 weapons at launch.
The Inner Circuit M4 blueprint
In September, a dedicated post announced one more bonus for any digital pre-order: the "Inner Circuit" blueprint for the M4, ready to use at launch. The fun part is the look. On Xbox Series X|S, the weapon gets a translucent green finish, a tribute to 25 years of Xbox, that shows the mechanism inside. On other platforms, the same blueprint has a regular military look. The look depends on the platform you play on, not on a choice, and the post states that both versions work the same.
The post also lists the blueprint's five attachments: the 11.5" Shortline Barrel, the FTAC Dominion Muzzle compensator, the FSS Fireline Grip, the SZ Prima-4 Dot Optic and the ZLR ASP50 Stock. Going by the official description, the idea is to make the M4 lighter and easier to handle, good for players who keep moving and fight at close or medium range, and also as a backup weapon for sniper rifle users. In return, it loses long-range reach. Redemption requires the same platform as the pre-order and runs until October 23, 2027.
Why Modern Warfare 4 did not join Game Pass
The October 15 post explains that Modern Warfare 4 is sold separately: to play at launch, you have to buy the game. According to the post, it only joins Game Pass in late 2027 (the official text says "Holiday 2027"). Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. For Xbox players, the same post sums up where to buy (the console store, the Xbox app on PC and the Microsoft Store) and repeats the digital bonuses: campaign early access from October 16, DMZ early access from October 20, Hunter Killer, the Gilded Pearl pack and the Inner Circuit.
Before you buy anything
Games in the series are rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB. If you are under 18, talk to your parents or guardians before any purchase, in or out of the game. Be wary of anyone promising free editions, blueprints or COD Points in exchange for your login or password: official bonuses only arrive through your platform's store and your own account.
