Modern Warfare 4 hit stores on October 23, 2026, but the campaign opened a week earlier for people who bought the game in advance. Two posts on the official blog explain what to expect from the story mode: "Modern Warfare 4: Campaign Early Access Now Live", from October 16, 2026, and "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: The Story So Far", from September 16, 2026, which recaps the plot of the previous games. This article, written by the SequeLariCOD team in our own words, brings together what both posts say: where the campaign takes place, who the characters are, how early access worked and which rewards it unlocks for multiplayer and DMZ. We do not spoil the ending or describe combat scenes.
Where and when the story happens
According to the early access post, the campaign has sixteen missions and visits four places: the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai. The starting point is a large-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula. The recap post adds that the story shows South Korea facing an invasion from the North and mentions fighting in Hajin, the same region that names this generation's Warzone map and DMZ. Anyone who has explored Hajin in battle royale will recognize the setting, but in the campaign it is part of a self-contained story with a beginning, middle and end.
The two sides of the campaign
The campaign is split between two points of view. On one side is Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier defending his country with his squad. Through him, the player lives the invasion up close. On the other side is John Price, the captain who led Task Force 141 in the previous games. The post now describes him as a former operator turned fugitive, working on his own to find whoever is behind the invasion. The recap post talks about a hunt driven by revenge, unlikely alliances and a weapon capable of shifting the world's balance of power.
Good news for newcomers: "The Story So Far" says you do not need to have played the earlier titles to follow the story of Modern Warfare 4. Still, knowing the road that brought Price here helps make sense of his choices.
What came before: the Modern Warfare trilogy
The official recap summarizes the three games that form the basis of the new story. Here is only the essentials, without scene details:
- Modern Warfare (2019): introduces Verdansk, the fictional country of Urzikstan and the beginning of Task Force 141, put together with the support of Kate Laswell, a CIA station chief. Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, Farah Karim, commander of the Urzikstan Liberation Force, and agent Alex Keller first appear here.
- Modern Warfare II (2022): the team grows with Johnny "Soap" MacTavish and Simon "Ghost" Riley. The story goes through Mexico, with Colonel Alejandro Vargas and Valeria Garza, and reveals the conflict between Price and General Shepherd, his superior, and the private military company Shadow Company, led by Phillip Graves.
- Modern Warfare III (2023): Vladimir Makarov becomes the main villain, with plans against Europe. The game ends with losses for Task Force 141 and with Price removed from the official system, which is exactly where he starts in Modern Warfare 4.
In other words, the Price players meet in the new game no longer has the backing he used to have and acts on his own. That change is what connects the trilogy to the new story set in Korea.
How early access worked
Campaign early access began on October 16, 2026 and ran until launch on October 23. It applied to anyone who pre-ordered or digitally pre-purchased the Standard Digital or Vault editions, and the whole campaign was unlocked during that period. The platforms listed in the post are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The post gave no opening time. Then, on October 20, came DMZ early access, also before the full launch. All three dates are in the site's calendar.
The reward for each mission
The most useful part for multiplayer players is that each completed mission unlocks an item that can be used in multiplayer and DMZ after launch. There are eight base Operators, plus XP tokens, a Calling Card, a Loading Screen and an Emblem. According to the official post, the order is:
- Mission 1: "Cho" base Operator
- Mission 2: "No More Rules" Calling Card
- Mission 3: Double XP Token
- Mission 4: "Dallas" base Operator
- Mission 5: "Ready Line" Loading Screen
- Mission 6: "Luca" base Operator
- Mission 7: "Gone Dark" Emblem
- Mission 8: "Oh-Ji" base Operator
- Mission 9: Double XP Token
- Mission 10: "Kal" base Operator
- Mission 11: Double Weapon XP Token
- Mission 12: "Dunn" base Operator
- Mission 13: Double Weapon XP Token
- Mission 14: "West" base Operator
- Mission 15: Double XP Token
- Mission 16: "Park" base Operator
The eight Operators (Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West and Park) are already on our Operators page, each with the mission that unlocks it. A curiosity: one image caption in the post spells "Chow", but the text uses "Cho", which is how the site records it. Double XP Tokens help you level up faster; the glossary explains how they work.
Rating and playing safe
Remember that Modern Warfare 4 is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB, and the post itself lists blood, intense violence, strong language, suggestive themes, use of drugs and in-game purchases. The campaign is the part of the game where these themes are strongest, since it is a war story. For families, the site's Play safe page shows where the official parental controls are.

- Two protagonists: Private Park Hyun Jun and John Price, now a fugitive.
