About the family
The PC Engine launched in Japan on October 30, 1987, made by NEC with Hudson Soft, which designed the chips. Games came on credit-card-sized HuCards, and the CD-ROM add-on arrived in 1988. According to Nintendo Life, by the end of 1988 it was Japan's best-selling console. In the United States it was called the TurboGrafx-16 and did far less well; in Europe it stayed an import. The more powerful SuperGrafx followed in 1989 and the Duo in 1991. Konami, which bought Hudson in 2011, released a mini version in 2020.
