About the family
Atari was founded in June 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney in Sunnyvale, California, and released the Pong arcade game on November 29 of that year. In 1977 came the Atari VCS, later called the Atari 2600, which brought cartridges into the living room; according to History.com, it sold more than 30 million units and was discontinued in 1992. The Atari 5200, the Atari 7800 and the Lynx handheld followed. The brand's last console of that era was the Jaguar, launched on November 23, 1993 and marketed as the first 64-bit system; according to the Home Computer Museum, it sold no more than 150,000 units and was discontinued in 1996.
